What Is the Vagus Nerve?
The vagus nerve, the 10th cranial nerve, is the longest cranial nerve in the body, running from the brainstem to nearly every major organ. Early cardiac research in the 1900s first drew attention to its role in heart function. In the 1990s, Dr. Stephen Porges introduced Polyvagal Theory, offering a new framework for understanding how the autonomic nervous system relates to safety and connection, a foundation much of today’s vagal regulation work builds on.
