Pediatric physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists frequently work with children who struggle with attention, communication, motor planning, feeding, or emotional regulation despite appropriate therapeutic interventions. Emerging neuroscience highlights the vagus nerve as a key regulator of arousal, social engagement, and learning readiness, yet many clinicians lack clear, practical guidance on how to apply this knowledge within everyday therapy sessions.
This course reframes the vagus nerve through a clinically relevant pediatric and somatic lens, moving beyond the misconception that regulation simply means calming down. Participants will explore why regulation is not synonymous with calm, why compliance is not a marker of success, and how speech, feeding, posture, attention, endurance, and motor output are often expressions of nervous system state and body-based (somatic) responses rather than isolated skill deficits.
Rather than focusing on anatomy alone, the course introduces a functional Vagus nerve map grounded in observable clinical signs, including changes in voice quality and prosody, facial expression, eye contact variability, breathing patterns during tasks, digestive cues such as gagging or fatigue, and postural collapse versus readiness. This framework enhances interdisciplinary clinical reasoning without crossing into diagnosis. A central focus of the training is the integration of play-based, in-session Vagus nerve and somatic regulation strategies that are immediately applicable across PT, OT, and SLP practice. Techniques are organized into practical categories to support confident clinical decision-making and include vocal and prosodic activities, breath variability strategies, movement-based regulation, sensory-vagal inputs, and oral-facial, feeding-adjacent approaches that remain firmly within professional scope.
Participants will also learn how to match intervention strategies to the nervous system state, including supporting children with high arousal without inducing shutdown, activating children with low arousal without overwhelming them, and responding to fluctuating regulation during therapy sessions. Case examples relevant to PT, OT, and SLP practice illustrate how state-based strategies can improve engagement, communication, motor performance, and therapeutic carryover.
By the end of this course, participants will leave with practical tools they can implement immediately, an enhanced understanding of the nervous system and somatic regulation in pediatric therapy, and increased confidence in supporting communication, movement, and learning through a regulation-first approach.
