The primary occupation of a child is play and play is a key component for development and learning. Clinicians and educators are very aware of this, but often find it challenging to be fully play-based in their interventions. Many report feeling pressure, both external and internal, that in playing with a child they are not truly working with them.
Understanding the complexity of play from a developmental perspective gives meaning and purpose to using play in clinical and educational settings. Using a DIRFloortime lens, this course will explore different types of play and how it naturally supports a child’s growth across all areas of development.
Lecture, case histories and video examples will be used to explore the development of play. We will take a deep dive into a few specific examples of play to analyze the complexity of what it means for the child and how understanding this supports therapists and educators to feel confident in providing interventions that are truly play-based.
